The Road to XVI: Lions drop to 0-13
Once again, the Detroit Lions were unable to emerge victorious. For a little while, it looked like they might blow their imperfect season. But, like against Tampa Bay, they managed to lose. Even a Gus Frerrote injury couldn't do the trick. Don't be surprised if they actually do go 0-16, because the Lions aren't your ordinary bad team. So what sets the Lions apart? It's hard to say they are worse than the '07 Dolphins when you consider that the Lions are actually talented in some areas. Kevin Smith is good. The passing is good. Hanson could win kicker of the year. But what makes them special is that they know how to find a way to lose. 17 point lead? No problem. Lead for most of the game? No problem. The Lions have just three games left. They are 81.25% of the way to their goal. Let's see what the magic 8 ball says about who's left to play. Next up is the Indianapolis Colts-arguably the hottest team in the league. They have a great QB in Manning. The Lions, meanwhile, have been playing musical quarterbacks all year. What say, magic 8 ball? "I believe in the invisi-" whoops, sorry that's Rod Marinelli. Magic 8 ball? "lions lose, go 0-14". That's better. How about week 16, when they play the New Orleans Saints, who are led by MVP candidate Drew Brees? "Lions lose, unless Brees breaks leg, improve to 0-15". And last, but not least, what about when they face Green Bay at Lambeau Field, a place where they rarely ever win?........... Magic 8 ball?... Are you still there?... "Prediction currently not available". OK then. Wait a minute, I just thought of a Lions motto: "Winning currently not available".
